Everything you need to know about a camera !
In this post I will talk all about cameras with a lot of images, so buckle up my visual lerners. This post is for you.
Definition :
Camera : a device for recording visual images in the form of photographs, film, or video signals.
The study of THE camera :
In order to record amazing and professional videos with a camera you must learn and understand not only how to use it but also the functions of all the buttons !
The following picture is a good explanation of each button
Camera shot size : a camera shot size defines how much of a setting or subject is being shon within the set frame. Following are the shots that are mostly used while filming anything.
- Extreme Wide Shot (XWS). For example city view, It can be used in the establishing shot to show time and place,
- Very Wide Shot (VWS) eg Street View
- Wide Shot (WS) OR Full Shot (FS) OR Long Shot (LS)
- Mid Long Shot (MLS). Advice: it should not cut directly on joints.
- Mid Shot (MS) Waist up.
- Mid Close Up (MCU) chest up
- Close Up Shot (SU) Neck and Face
- Big Close Up (BCU) even part of forehead excluded
- Extreme Close Up (ECU) just the eyes.
Camera angles : The camera angle refers to the position at which the camera is placed while taking a shot. These shots are mostly used to convey emotions non-verbally.
The following are those shots.
- Eye Level Shot (also called a neutral shot)
- High Angle Shot (*in this shot, the CAMERA is placed at a high angle, NOT the subject.) It can be used to show the helplessness of the subject.
- Low Angle Shot: can be used to show authority.
- Bird's Eye View/Aerial View
- Worm's Eye View
- Dutch Tilt
- Master Shot (the entire setting of the room)
Camera Movement:
On An Axis (camera on a tripod)=*
- Pan left or Pan right *
- Tilt Up or Tilt Down *
- Pan Tilt *
- Slider Movement; slide left or slide right. subject is still, camera moves.
- Tracking Movement: Subject tracked, or followed. it can either be track in, track out, track left or track right.
- Dolly In or Dolly Out; camera gradually and smoothly moving in and out/away from subject
- Arch Shot; camera moving around subject.
- 360 shot
- Jib/Pedestal/Crane movement. Camera sliding up and down
- Crane Slider
- Crane Tilt
